Just In : CHINA SURROUNDS TAIWAN WITH OVER 100 SHIPS AS XI INSISTS REUNIFICATION IS “UNSTOPPABLE”
Taiwan raised the alarm this weekend: more than 100 Chinese vessels, including warships, coast guard ships and research vessels, were detected operating at the same time across waters stretching from the Yellow Sea to the South China Sea and the western Pacific.
It is one of Beijing’s largest naval mobilizations in years.
The announcement came from Joseph Wu, Secretary-General of Taiwan’s National Security Council, who revealed that the buildup is concentrated around the so-called “first island chain”, a strategic line running from Japan through Taiwan down to the Philippines.
Behind the pressure lies Xi Jinping’s stance.
,The Chinese leader considers Taiwan part of China’s territory and has repeatedly said reunification is “unstoppable”, without ruling out the use of force.
At the recent summit with Donald Trump in Beijing, he made clear that Taiwan is the most sensitive issue between the two powers.
Taiwan rejects that view and insists that only its own people can decide their future. Meanwhile, Washington has paused weapons shipments to the island:
Congress approved a 14 billion dollar military package in January, but Trump has not signed off on it yet.
Japan and the Philippines have already stepped up surveillance, and analysts fear that any accidental incident in these waters, where much of global trade flows, could escalate quickly.
The Taiwan Strait is now living through one of its tensest moments.
